Versatile Huntsman Araldite 2000 Plus Adhesive Is Ideal For Fabricating Composite Rowing Shells

Woodlands, TX - Polyurethane Combines Good Processing and Performance Characteristics

To produce durable rowing shells for touring, manufacturers are turning to fiber-reinforced plastics to produce stiff, lightweight hulls that are then bonded to composite or wooden ribs. Assembly of shell components calls for an adhesive that is suitable for bonding large composite parts, attains handling strength in minimal time and yields long-lasting joints even when exposed to sun, temperature extremes and water.

To meet this combination of requirements, Huntsman Advanced Materials has introduced a new polyurethane known as Araldite 2055 adhesive. The product is a beige paste that has a work life of 45 to 60 minutes at room temperature. Bonded components can be handled after six hours at 73ºF (23ºC).

Araldite 2055 polyurethane adhesive is thixotropic and gap-filling. It is specifically formulated for joining glass-reinforced plastics, SMC, ABS and PVC. Araldite 2055 adhesive has good lap shear strength and peel strength, even when exposed to an outdoor marine environment.

To assemble glass-reinforced plastic and wood substrates, technicians simply sand and degrease surfaces to remove contaminants. Strongest joints are obtained by mechanically abrading or chemically etching degreased surfaces followed by a second degreasing treatment. Mixed adhesive can then be applied to prepared surfaces, components joined, and parts allowed to cure for six hours at 104ºF (40ºC). To facilitate handling, Araldite 2055 polyurethane is packaged in waste-free, 400ml dual-barrel cartridges that provide for precise ratio control of resin and hardener and ensure thorough blending with disposable static mix nozzles.

Araldite 2055 polyurethane adhesive is part of a new portfolio of structural adhesives from Huntsman Advanced Materials. The full family of Araldite 2000 PLUS adhesives comprises 12 advanced epoxy, methacrylate and polyurethane systems designed to produce long-lasting bonds with high shear, peel and compression strength on a broad range of substrates.
