Unique Duplex Basket Strainer Handles High Flow Rates With Minimal Pressure Loss
Featuring a unique design concept that results in an extremely low pressure loss, the Hayward Model 50 duplex basket strainer is sized for 10" to 18" high flow pipelines. In removing particulates down to 1/64" in size, the Model 50 is said to offer significant advantages over ordinary basket strainers.
Unlike the flow in other large duplex strainers, the flow in the Model 50 enters the basket chamber in a straight flow pattern with no sudden changes in direction. This results in a lower pressure loss than would normally be expected in strainers of these sizes. The 10" strainer, for example, can handle a flow of 2,000 gpm of water with a pressure loss of only 2 psi. An additional important feature of the Model 50 is the compact size of the strainer basket. This results in lower weight and a reduction in the profile of the strainer . . . important considerations in applications where space is at a premium. Specially-designed synchronized butterfly valves, open and closed via a single handwheel operator, divert the flow of fluid from one basket to the other. The butterfly valves are balanced so that a minimal amount of effort is required to switch the flow. Diverting the flow from one basket to the other permits cleaning of the dirty basket while allowing the pipeline flow to continue unintermpted. Downtime of the overall system is decreased while productivity is increased.
These strainers have quick-opening covers that require neither tools nor lifting gear to open. It is said to take less than a minute to open the cover and replace the dirty basket. This feature is uncommon on large duplex strainers which usually require complex, expensive assemblies to remove and hold open the basket chamber covers.
Type 316 stainless steel strainer baskets are standard equipment for Model 50 strainers. Furthermore, the baskets have a special convoluted (pleated) design which greatly increases the screening area while reducing the overall size of the basket. Perforated and fine mesh-lined baskets are available to meet the requirements of all straining applications. Model 50 strainers, in 10" to 18" sizes, are available in iron, ductile iron and bronze with flanged connections.
