Trigen-Cinergy Breaks Ground for 28-Megawatt CHP Plant

A ceremony was held today to mark the commencement of construction for a new combined heat and power (CHP) plant to provide electricity and steam for industrial processes at the Ashtabula Complex of Millennium Inorganic Chemicals, ("Millennium") in Ashtabula, OH. The outsourcing project is part of a plan to reduce energy costs by 20% throughout Millennium's global organization. Through a partnership agreement with Trigen-Cinergy Solutions (TCS), specified worldwide Millennium operations are outsourcing generation of their steam and electric supply, enabling them to focus on the manufacture of quality titanium dioxide pigments used in the paper, plastics and paints industry.

Brian Goedke, Millennium Inorganic Chemicals' director of manufacturing-Ashtabula Complex, says, "This project demonstrates a commitment to the TiO2 business, the Ashtabula Complex and the community through a $25 million investment that will reduce costs, protect jobs and reduce air emissions. Trigen-Cinergy Solutions' proven track record for performing similar services on other projects was a key factor in selecting them as our energy provider. They've made a great effort to understand our needs and, as a result, have created even greater savings and value for the Ashtabula Complex."

Kevin Hooker, station manager for Trigen-Cinergy Solutions, states, "Millennium can expect substantial savings in energy costs and fuel management during the life of the 20-year contract. We anticipate the addition of up to 100 construction personnel, primarily from the Ashtabula area, as well as long term jobs for the community. The project is expected to go on line in the fourth quarter of this year. We are pleased to support Millennium's efforts to expand their capabilities in the marketplace."

The worldwide energy agreement, which was announced in June 1999, provides the framework for TCS to design, build and operate combined heat and power plants and provide energy and utility services for several of Millennium's facilities. For the Ashtabula project, TCS will install a 28-megawatt CHP plant that will be located between Plant 1 and Plant 2 on Middle Road. The new power plant will provide electricity and steam for industrial processes at the Ashtabula Complex. Construction is on schedule, with installation of the CHP equipment is imminent.
