The Single Spark Evaluation Mapping System detects, measures, and maps inclusions and elemental segregation in metal surfaces

The Single Spark Evaluation Mapping System detects, measures, and maps inclusions and elemental segregation in metal surfaces. The mapping system and options with the Spectrolab and SpectrolabS include X-Y servo controlled sample stand handling system and special data processing and presentation software.

The mapping system creates both linear and two-dimensional plots of sample surfaces. Two dimension scans are used in center line segregation studies of elements such as C, Mn, P, and S that tend to concentrate in the liquid phase of steel during solidification. The scans also give an overview of the composition variation of the sample surface and are useful in the study of MnS and CaS inclusion distribution. When plotting linear scans, a visual comparison of eight elements can be displayed on the screen. The system also provides correlation studies between elements to allow inference of inclusion composition.
