Raytheon Engineers & Constructors Receives Contract for PO/SM Expansion Project in Korea

SK Oxichemical Co., Ltd. has awarded Raytheon Engineers & Constructors (Cambridge, Mass.) a contract to provide design services for the expansion of SK Oxichemical's propylene oxide/styrene monomer (PO/SM) production facility in Ulsan, Korea. Design work has begun and is scheduled for completion in July 1998. The value of the contract was not disclosed.

Propylene oxide is used in the manufacture of urethane foams commonly found in cushioning, seating, and bedding. It is also used in the manufacture of propylene glycols, a basic chemical used in the production of polyester resins. Styrene monomer, co-produced in this process, is used in the production of plastics and synthetic rubber.

In 1987, the Badger Company, a Raytheon Engineers & Constructors predecessor company, designed the original PO/SM plant for SK Oxichemical Co., then known as Yukong Oxichemical. In 1993, Raytheon designed an expansion that increased the plant's capacity by 25 percent. The current expansion will increase the original facility's capacity by 75 percent.
