Powder/Bulk Solids: New IR Gauge Promises Fit-and-Forget Operation

Powder/Bulk Solids: New IR Gauge Promises Fit-and-Forget Operation
A new near infrared (NIR) measuring device promises to be so intelligent, users can set it and leave it alone. According to NDC Infrared Engineering Inc. (Irwindale, CA), the new MM710 measures four chemical constituents at a time in a mixed flow, operates up to 10 times faster than conventional gauges, and comes precalibrated.

NDC's Karen Holcomb and manufacturer's rep Jim Winston of Patrick & Douglas (Brown Deer, WI) display the new MM710 at the Powder & Bulk Solids show in Chicago.

"One of the best features is that you can use it as a stand-alone device or plug it directly into your PC, DCS, or PLC," said NDC marketer Karen Holcomb at the Powder & Bulk Solids show in Chicago.

"It operates with up to 10 filters, and can measure up to four chemicals at a time," she continues. "On food lines, for example, it simultaneously measures moisture, fat, protein, and sugars." Chemical uses range from explosives, detergents, pharmaceuticals, and celulose to resins, rubber crumb, and neoprene rope.

She also notes that the unit requires no routine maintenance or recalibration. The system uses powerful algorithms, broader coverage of the NIR spectrum (to avoid calibration problems caused by color and compositional shifts), and dual detector referencing to remain stable over long periods of time.

The MM710 also includes diagnostics to monitor its internal electronics, source lamp, and motor. It also warns when dangerous levels of residues build up on the unit's window.
