Portfolio Expanded: New Platinum Catalyst For SO₂ Oxidation In H₂SO₄ Production
C&CS announces the addition of a new platinum-based honeycomb catalyst for the oxidation of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) for sulfuric acid production to its portfolio. The catalyst is designed to increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions in sulfuric acid production. Compared to conventional vanadium oxide-based catalysts, the platinum-based catalyst exhibits higher catalytic activity, a lower ignition temperature, and significantly lower toxicity.
The new platinum-based honeycomb catalyst invented by P&P Industries AG is highly cost-effective due to the effective use of platinum as the active phase in combination with a tailor-made washcoat on a robust and resilient ceramic support. Both the formulation and the manufacturing process are proprietary and are currently in the patenting process.
The PPH catalysts manufactured by P&P demonstrate superior catalytic properties compared to modern V2O5 catalysts. Catalyst activity, ignition temperature, and pressure drop have been raised to new levels, enabling a reduction in capital and operating costs (CAPEX and OPEX) while simultaneously improving the environmental performance of the processes.
This innovative catalyst has proven itself a reliable product in industrial sulfuric acid production. PPH catalysts can be used even under challenging conditions, such as those found in metallurgical processes, impressively demonstrating their resistance to catalyst poisoning. P&P's platinum-based honeycomb catalysts are already in successful operation in over 30 plants worldwide.
