Plastic Limit Roller for soils is intended for use within ASTM D 4318 and AASHTO T90 procedures. Adopted by Texas DOT, this device allows to determine the plastic limit with 1.5 to 2.0g soil portions by alternately forming the soil into ellipsoidal masses, then rolling them into uniform threads decreasing to 3.2mm (1/8 in.) diameter. As the soil becomes drier, it crumbles when rolled; and the plastic limit (water percent) is determined by immediate weighing.

The SA-18 Plastic Limit Roller device consists of top and bottom roller plates separated by 1/8 in. (3.2mm) side rails. Contact surfaces of the plates are covered with sheets of special adhesive-backed absorbent paper that adds no fiber to soil samples. Up to five soil samples can be rolled simultaneously between the moving top plate and fixed bottom plate. Soil thread diameters are reduced by back and forth action until the top plate contacts the 1/8 in. (3.2mm) side rails, preventing further thread size reduction.

The SA-18 is supplied complete with integral top plate handle, a pad of 50 sheets of adhesive paper, and instructions for use.
