History
MTS Automation Division (originally known as Custom Servo Motors Inc.) was founded in 1991, by William G. Anderson, Vice President-General Manager. In October 1992, MTS Systems Corporation acquired Custom Servo Motors and merged an existing machine controls division into Custom Servo Motors. Since this time, Custom Servo Motors has grown tremendously by providing engineering solutions for the motion control industry.
In December 1996, Custom Servo Motors. acquired Bregenhorn-Bütow, a German manufacturer of specialized, low powered amplifiers, now operating as Custom Servo Motors Antriebstechnik GmbH & Co. KG. With this acquisition Custom Servo Motors created opportunities to provide products and application expertise to the global market.
In 1998 William Anderson presented "Strategy 2001, Growth by Design" a three year plan of strengthening sales, adding new markets, and developing product technology. The first strategic fit came into play in June of 1998, with an acquisition of Performance Control Inc., a sophisticated proprietary amplifier manufacturer located in Horsham, Pennsylvania. PCI's unique electronic technology adds substantial breadth to the technical product development and application service of the Automation Division.
With Custom Servo Motors latest acquisition, the over all profile of the company was expanding in the motion control industry. On October 1, 1999 a new name "MTS Systems Corporation Automation Division" was created, now a division of MTS Systems Corporation. The new identity is a more complete view of the products, services, and capabilities available to the automation industry.
MTS Automation Division made their presence known on the World Wide Web October of 1998 at www.mtsautomation.com. The new web site is equipped with a state-of-the-art ServoSelector unlike any other in the industry. This powerful web site tool provides the freedom to create, design, and print the results of a servo motor specifically configured to the users' application needs.
In December 1998, another strategic move was made in acquiring the linear motor technology from Airex, located in Dover, New Hampshire. The engineering and production of the new linear motor line was moved to the headquarters in New Ulm, Minnesota. With this production in process, MTS Automation Division will have the competitive edge in today's automation market.
PowerBlok Servo Drives are the latest products to receive the MaxPlus trademark. MTS Automation Division acquired the technology of PowerBlok in October of 1999. PowerBlok was previously owned and manufactured by Semipower, Inc., located in San Jose, California. MTS Automation Division will market, sell, manufacture and service the MaxPlus™ PowerBlok product line as an integral part of its motion product portfolio. This line gives MTS Automation Division a proven, all-digital direct pulse width modulated servo drive that is cost effective, and will broaden our amplifier product offering in the high volume OEM markets. The manufacturing will be moved to MTS Automation Division Horsham, PA facility. In the future MTS Automation Division plans to manufacture MaxPlus™ PowerBlok in Stralsund, Germany for European customers.
