Merichem and USFilter announce sale of sulfur removal business, gas

Merichem Chemicals & Refinery Services LLC (Merichem) and USFilter announced today that Merichem has acquired all assets of USFilter's Gas Technology Products (GTP) business of Schaumburg, Ill., a leading company for sulfur emission reduction and control systems within the hydrocarbon processing industry.

"This acquisition expands Merichem's technology offerings and market scope, strengthening our ability to provide our customers with the high quality products and services they have come to expect from Merichem," said Dr. Johnny Walbrick, president of Merichem Chemicals & Refinery Services. "GTP's catalyst business also fits well with our chemical manufacturing activities and our offerings of oxidation technology. Combining our technical strengths and services will lead to better solutions for our customers."

Gary Nagl, vice president and general manager of GTP, believes that Merichem and GTP share synergies that will be beneficial to both gas and oil processors as well as to the chemical processingindustry and less traditional areas of the geothermal, landfill and wastewater treatment industries. "Together, we are able to offer a broader and deeper portfolio of solutions to provide our current and future customers access to new, innovative and more cost-effective solutions for hydrogen sulfide removal," said Nagl.

Frank Firsching, president of USFilter's Water and Wastewater Systems group, explained that the sale was consistent with USFilter's long-term strategy of focusing its growth within the municipal and industrial water treatment and services business.

"Gas Technology Products is a leader in its field of sulfur removal systems. USFilter wanted to find a company focused in GTP's principal area of business that would continue to grow and invest in the business and its employees for the long term," Firsching said. "We feel we found that company in Merichem. USFilter remains more fully committed than ever to meeting the water and wastewater treatment needs of customers in the oil & gas and hydrocarbon processing industries. We continue to develop new products, treatment technologies and services to further strengthen our offering to these key markets."

Price and terms of the sales were not disclosed. Gas Technology Products LLC will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Merichem Chemicals & Refinery Services LLC based in Houston and will include GTP's research facility in Plainfield, Ill.
