Prior to widespread computer system use in chemical plants, equipment maintenance was highly reactive. Typically, this meant waiting until assets broke down before responding. As technology evolved, plants moved into preventive maintenance — calendar or run-based (days in service or hours of operation) — which helped managers and engineers get ahead of failures in a method with at least some scientific basis.
