KAAP Ammonia Plant In Trinidad Completes Performance Review
The new Farmland MissChem, Ltd. ammonia plant in Point Lisas North, Trinidad has successfully completed its performance test run at more than 103 percent of its 1,850 mtpd (2,040 stpd) design capacity.
The plant was designed and built by The M.W. Kellogg Company and work was completed in less than 27 months from contract signing. Using predominantly local labor resources, the project was completed without a lost-time accident in more than four million work hours.
"We performed extensive Process Hazard Analysis to ensure the safety of personnel and the community," said John Prijatel, president of Farmland MissChem, at the plant's dedication on July 29. "We also coordinated extensively with the Environmental Management Authority, the Institute of Marine Affairs and other agencies to protect the environment in general. The plant itself satisfied World Bank standards."
The Farmland MissChem facility is the second grassroots KAAP (Kellogg Advanced Ammonia Process) plant to successfully complete its performance test during July. On July 3, PCS Nitrogen Trinidad Ltd.'s facility passed its performance review. KAAP is a synthesis technology that uses a precious-metal-based catalyst to reduce energy while operating at less severe conditions than conventional technology.
