Application Note

Improving Efficiencies In Pickling Baths

Source: Anton Paar USA
Pickling Bath

Pickling baths are used to remove iron oxide and other scale created during hot rolling of sheet metal or other fabrication steps without removing base material. More accurate pickling bath concentration saves resources and time while improving quality and revenue. The pickling solution is a three component solution composed of acid, water and metallic salt (FeSO4, FeCl2 etc.).

A typical production process is summarized below.  Anton Paar offers solutions for the measurement of acid and salt concentrations at the numbered locations using density (1), or a combination system consisting of density and conductivity (4).  The combined system of density and conductivity allows for the determination of both acid and salt concentration, which can be used to optimize process efficiency and increase profits.
