Hyprotech Adds Simulation Capabilities in Sulfur Production, Thermodynamics

Hyprotech Ltd. (Norman, OK) has bolstered its the capabilities of its Hysys process simulation program in sulfur plant and thermodynamics simulation. Hyprotech is a subsidiary of Britain's AEA Technology plc, and part of its AEA Technology Engineering Software group.

According to Hyprotech, Hysys is the only commercially available integrated simulation environment designed for complete user customization. It enables users to seamlessly integrate proprietary unit operations, reactions, and property packages, as well as interact with other applications to create powerful hybrid programs.

Sulfur

In sulfur, Hyprotech will integrate Sulsim, a comprehensive sulfur plant simulator, into Hyprotech's Hysys process simulation environment. Sulsim was developed by Sulphur Experts Inc. (Calgary, AB), a process engineering and consulting company serving the sour gas and oil refining industries.

Sulsim lets engineers design, evaluate, and optimize the process units included in most sulfur recovery systems. It permits simulation of the basic modified Claus process, as well as such common process enhancements as sub-dewpoint, selective oxidation and amine-based tail gas clean-up processes.

The integrated product will enable gas processors and refiners to incorporate sulfur recovery into process design and optimization. The new link between Hysys and Sulsim eliminates redundant data entry and simplifies evaluation of how process changes affect sulfur recovery units.

"The ability to account for the effects of process changes on sulfur recovery units provides our customers with the critical tools needed to optimize their processes while accounting for today's stringent environmental regulations," says Hysys Business Manager Matt Oettli.

Thermodynamics

Hyprotech also announced it will strengthen its relationship with Robinson & Associates Ltd. (DBR, Edmonton, AB) to provide advanced thermodynamics capabilities for gas processing, refining, and oil and gas production.

The companies will codevelop and market a thermodynamics component based on Hyprotech's COM Thermo architecture that includes Hyprotech's and DBR's advanced thermodynamics capabilities.

The thermodynamics component will provide clients with advanced thermodynamics capabilities for in-house applications development. The developers will also use it in their engineering and simulation software products, including Hyprotech's Hysys and DBR's AMSIM.

According to Hyprotech R&D director Wayne Sim, "the ability to rapidly translate thermodynamic advances into simulation technology will vastly improve our mutual capability to provide best-of-breed customer solutions."
