GAIL (India) Ltd is planning to build a Petrochemical plant unit estimated at Rs 7,0000 million in Kerala. This unit in Kochi will be under the sole proprietorship of GAIL. The development of this project nonetheless will be determined entirely by the obtainability of LNG. Till date, PLL has not been able to acquire a strong commitment of the LNG suppliers for furnishing LNG.
The project is expected to take a time span of seven years for finishing the unit in Kochi. The Kochi plant, will be an integrated grassroot unit. The unit would be an ethane-propane (C2-C3) based petrochemical complex which will produce 600,000 tpa of ethylene and 100,000 tpa of propylene.
GAIL (India) Ltd has put across a request to the Union petroleum ministry to expand the selection of location of Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemical Investment Regions (PCPIR) to Lepetkata and Kochi. One can recollect how the Prime Minister had put up a task force on PCPIR; headed by the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, T.K.A Nair. The first meeting of the task force which was held in February was attended by senior officers from the state governments of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu including Chief Secretaries of Punjab & Haryana, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Kerala. The last day for submitting the bids is on 31st Dec' 2013.
