Dow And Davy License LP Oxo Technology To YanKuang Cathay Acetyl Chemical Company In China

Davy Process Technology Limited (DPT), a Johnson Matthey company, and The Dow Chemical Company's (Dow) Oxygenated Solvents business, announced that YanKuang Cathay Acetyl Chemical Company (YKCC) in Shandong, China, has selected LP Oxo SELECTORSM 10 Technology for its new facility in Mushi Town, Tengzhou City, Shandong Province, People's Republic of China. YKCC is currently building butyl acetate capacity, and is now driven to become vertically integrated from butyl acetate back to primary raw materials, in this case coal. With this license, YKCC will build a new 150 kta butanols plant with capacity of 136 kta of normal butanol, most of which will be used for the internal production of butyl acetate. This is the twelfth LP Oxo license to be granted in China.

"We are pleased to add YKCC to our expanding family of LP Oxo Technology licensees in China, and we are confident that YKCC's drive will enable them to move quickly toward start-up and a very successful long-term operation," stated Bruce Lipsitt, LP Oxo Licensing Business Director.

Following the signing of the contract, Dr David Tomlinson, President of DPT said, "We are honored YKCC has decided to proceed with their Butanol project utilizing the LP Oxo SELECTORSM 10 Technology. This will be the 44th project utilizing LP Oxo Process Technology and we look forward to working with YKCC throughout the plant design process, start-up and operation."

Other recent successful LP OxoSM SELECTORSM Technology start-ups in Asia include:
Tianjin Soda Plant and Lihuayi Group (China) - Tianjin Soda and Lihuayi Group both selected LP OxoSM SELECTORSM Technology for new 250 kta facilities each to produce 140 kta 2-ethyl hexanol, 85 kta normal butanol and 24.4 kta iso-butanol, both of which came on-stream in 2010.

Andhra Petrochemicals Limited (India) - Andhra Petrochemical Limited's LP Oxo facility is the only producer of oxo-alcohols in India. The company elected to retrofit and expand their existing LP OxoSM plant to use SELECTOR 30 Technology to produce up to 73 kta of 2-ethylhexanol, n-butanol and isobutanol, and restarted this expanded facility in 2010.

NanYa Plastics (Taiwan) - LP OxoSM SELECTORSM 30 Technology using the NORMAX™ Catalyst was selected by NanYa Plastics, a subsidiary of Formosa Plastics Group in Taiwan, to retrofit and expand its existing LP Oxo SELECTOR 10 facility, increasing production capacity of 2-ethylhexanol (2EH) to 200,000 metric tons per year. The SELECTOR 30 Technology enabled an increase in the normal-to-iso-butyraldehyde selectivity ratio to more than 30:1, which reduced propylene usage to 2EH by over 6 percent. This expanded facility also came on stream in 2010.
