Clearwater adds potassium formate capacity
Clearwater, Inc. (Pittsburgh, PA) has completed an expansion of its potassium formate brines facility to 15,000 mt/yr of 75% solution. The expansion comes one year after the ISO 9001 certified facility completed its first full year of production.

Clearwater specializes in oilfield chemicals and custom manufacturing. Its formate brines are used to increase polymer stability, stabilize shales, and reduce formation damage to maximize well productivity in well drilling, completion, and workover.

Clearwater manufactures several grades at its Pittsburgh plant, and maintains bulk inventories in Houston, TX, and Red Deer, AB. It says it is the only North American manufacturer of bulk potassium formate.

"The use of formate brines has grown rapidly," says Clearwater Organic Salts Div. manager John Hallman. "These fluids offer one of the best technical solutions for optimal well construction." CEO Kevin Smith says the company's engineered chemistry and understanding of application chemistry sets Clearwater apart from other manufacturers.

Clearwater's product line include oil and gas recovery polymers, surfactants, foaming agents, gellants, proppants, biocides, and corrosion inhibitors.

The company also does toll blending and contract manufacturing. Blending capabilities include liquid/liquid, liquid/solid, dry, and slurry blends. The company also provides custom formulation, tableting, drumming, bagging (including packing in water-soluble polymer bags), and MSDS and private label generation, warehouse and tank storage, and shipping.

The Clearwater Pittsburgh facility runs several chemical processes. These include production of phosphate esters, betaines, sultaines and chelated complexes; sulfamic acid sulfonations; quaternatizations; polymerizations; organic neutralizations and partial neutralizations; inorganic salt solutions reactions; and a variety of addition, substitution, and elimination reactions.
