Chemicals Manufacturer Huntsman New Expandable Polystyrene

Manufacturer of differentiated and commodity chemicals, Huntsman, adds a new low pentane expandable polystyrene resin to its portfolio of performance polymers

Huntsman Corporation announces that it has added a new low pentane expandable polystyrene (EPS) to its portfolio of performance polymers. The new product contains an average of 3.6% pentane by weight so is well within the parameters of EPA's rigorous emissions standards.

The new Huntsman EPS meets strict customer performance specifications and molds in a wide range of applications including insulation, roofing, geofoam and packaging. When properly molded it meets all ASTM C-578 criteria at applicable densities.

"The successful development of this product is the result of close consultation with our customers and the concerted efforts of everyone in our business group," said EPS Director, Shea Walker. "We could not be more pleased with the outcome."

Huntsman has been a leading U.S. manufacturer of Expandable Polystyrene Resins since 1986.

These products are produced in the form of very small beads with sizes ranging in diameters between 400 microns (0.400 mm) and 1600 microns (1.600 mm). The beads contain a blowing agent (pentane) in levels between 3 and 7% which allows our customers to expand the resins and then mold various forms of insulation or packaging parts as low as 1.00 pound per cubic foot, depending upon product grade and processing equipment.

Expanded polystyrene is a closed-cell, lightweight, rigid plastic foam. It is manufactured by one of two basic processes, extrusion or steam molding. Expandable Polystyrene Resins produced by Huntsman are typically molded into products destined for the building and construction or packaging industries. Typical end use applications might include insulation for roofing and wall systems or protective packaging for electronics, consumer goods, insulated concrete forms and structural insulated panels. Molded EPS is also used to make packaging products that allow the shipment of perishables such as steaks, seafood, and produce, as well as items for everyday use such as picnic coolers and ice chests.
