AM Green Ammonia Reaches Final Investment Decision (FID) On Its First Million Tonne Green Ammonia Project Located In Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, India

  • Financial financing for one of the world's largest green ammonia projects.
  • Targets of 1 million tonnes per year by 2026, with a long-term target of 5 million tonnes by 2030.
  • Partnership with John Cockerill for advanced pressurized alkaline electrolysers (1.3 GW), ensuring lower cost green molecules using 24/7 renewable energy (RE-RTC).
  • Most of the production will be exported to Europe, supporting green hydrogen goals in both India and Europe and helping global decarbonisation.

Hyderabad, Telangana /PRNewswire/ - AM Green Ammonia BV ("the Company") has obtained the Final Investment Decision (FID) for its first million tonne green ammonia project located in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, India. The FID for this project brings into operation the Company's targeted production capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia by 2030, equivalent to approximately 1 MTPA of green hydrogen. The Company, in addition to its founders, has Gentari and GIC as shareholders.

The total project expenditure for the plant will include a green hydrogen generation unit and its subsequent conversion to green ammonia, along with all other associated plant and infrastructure.

This project will be located at an existing urea plant in Kakinada, which the company acquired earlier this year and is part of the aforementioned capital expenditure. The company plans to convert this facility into a green ammonia production unit, which will commence production in the second half of 2026.

The Kakinada plant has been pre-certified by CertifHy as compliant with EU RFNBO requirements for green ammonia, including additionality and time-matching of renewables. Most of the production from this plant will be exported to European markets.

The company has already signed purchase term sheets for this project with major players such as Uniper, Yara, Keppel and others for the intended end use in a variety of green hydrogen applications.

The company has secured 1,300 MW of carbon-free energy around the clock, thanks to a hybrid solar and wind capacity of 4,500 MW in combination with a PSP capacity of 950 MW.

A 25-year fixed-price power purchase agreement has already been signed with NTPC, covering half of the above. The remaining capacity is expected to be supplied by Gentari.

The company has exclusive access to gigawatt-scale pumped storage projects and a 2GW-scale electrolyser manufacturing partnership with John Cockerill . These state-of-the-art, reliable pressurised alkaline electrolysers are anticipated to be used for this project.

Harnessing these capabilities provides solutions to the intermittency problems of renewable energy and enables up to 90% of the electrolysers deployed to be used, making this one of the most innovative and cost-effective green ammonia projects worldwide.

In addition to the Kakinada project, the company is also focusing on green ammonia production at multiple locations in India to achieve its planned capacity of 5 MTPA of green ammonia by 2030, which is expected to accelerate efforts to achieve net-zero emissions targets in India as well as in OECD markets. This will be equivalent to approximately 1 MTPA of green hydrogen, representing one-fifth of India ’s target for green hydrogen production under the country ’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and 10% of Europe’s target for green hydrogen imports by 20301.

Anil Chalamalasetty, Founder of Greenko Group and AM Green, said:
" The FID status achieved by our Kakinada plant underlines our commitment to providing carbon-free energy solutions globally, while complying with the highest standards such as the EU RFNBO norms. This is an important milestone for AM Green as it reinforces our position as a leading energy transition solutions platform helping to decarbonise industries such as refineries, shipping, fertilisers, power generation, chemicals and others through low-cost green molecules and their derivatives."
