Northern California Chapter Of The AICHE To Hold Annual Symposium - A Look Into The Future Of Bio-Factories

San Francisco, CA - The Northern California chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AICHE) will be holding its 49th Annual Symposium on April 14th, 2011 beginning at 1:00 P.M. at HS Lordships in Berkeley, California. This year's theme will be, "A look into the future of bio-factories - Exploring Technical and Manufacturing Innovations to Meet Increasing Demand."

The Symposium will comprise of a half day of presentations and exhibits featuring the latest technology development and products and services in the Biotechnology field.

Attendees will hear from thought leaders, scientists and chemical engineers about novel biomaterials, facility design, and process control strategies from Bay Area industries such as Biotechnology, Refineries, Biofuels, and Biomaterials.

The keynote presentation will be given Dr. Matthew Croughan, of the Keck Graduate Institute on Therapeutic Proteins, Specialty Chemicals, and Biofuels: The Past, Present, and Future of Biofactories'. Additional scheduled presentations include ‘Targeted Innovation in Bioprocessing' by Dr. Jens Vogel, Bayer Healthcare LLC, ‘Multifunctional Materials for Cancer Therapy' by Dr. Alan Fuchs, University of Nevada, Reno, ‘California Code Regulations for Biofactories' by Jeff Tarter of Integrated Engineering Services, Dynamic Feeding via Automated Sampling for High Productivity Cell Culture Process' by Franklin Lu, Genentech, Inc. and ‘Drug Development and Biodefense' by Dr. Milan Tomic, XOMA.

In addition, local biotech companies will be in attendance during Symposium. The following companies have agreed to exhibit: Coker Pump & Equipment Company, Optimal Biotech Group, LLC, Pall Life Sciences, Avantor Performance Materials, Life Technologies, Purolator - PecoFacet, Alfa Laval, EMD Millipore, Commissioning Agents, Inc., and Bug Lab.

"The recent utilization of biotechnology to increase productivity and reduce the costs of value added materials such as pharmaceuticals and biomaterials have the potential to transform our entire economy", said Jean Bender, NORCAL AICHE Chapter Chair and a Late Stage Purification Engineer at Genentech. "Since the Bay Area is the location for many of the emerging companies in bio-technology it was a natural choice to chose this topic for this years' Symposium."
