Safe Water SolutionsEM FOR DESTROYING CRYPTOSPORIDIUM AND GIARDIA <%=company%> (Brown Deer, WI) has introduced an ultraviolet-based system designed specifically to inactivate Cryptosporidium and Giardia in drinking water, and to be capable of treating up to 1.25 million gallons per day. Both types of microorganisms are extremely resistant to chlorine and difficult to treat with conventional UV systems. In particular, after a recent series of outbreaks, the U.S. En vironmental Protection Agency has identified Cryptosporidium as a serious and growing health risk.

Designated Models CID-2S and 4S, the electronically-controlled, in-line system subjects the cysts and oocysts to two treatment cycles, each delivering multiple UV doses. Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and many other highly resistant microorganisms are inactivated, without producing any filtrate or bio-hazardous by-products. Water enters the treatment chamber from conventional drinking water treatment processes and passes through a filter screen. Cysts and oocysts are trapped on the screen, where they are irradiated by the ultraviolet source operating at a preset germicidal wavelength. The flow through the chamber is reversed and the organisms are washed off the screen into a second chamber, where the process is repeated.

Eight motorized valves are used to operate the disinfection process on a continuous basis. Flow reversal ensures that debris is not accumulated on the screens. Screen status is monitored using differential pressure sensors.

The system is constructed of 316L stainless steel, has an integral 240 V a-c, 60 Hz power supply, and is available in two versions. The CID-2S treats flow rates of up to 440 gallons per minute (gpm), has two surface screens, and consumes just 2.2 kwh. I t measures approximately 8 ft long by 4 ft wide by 4 ft. high. The CID-4S treats flow rates of up to 880 gpm, has four surface screens, and consumes 3.2 kwh of power. Its dimensions are approximately 8 x 4 x 7 ft.
