All housings and end plates of Smoot Rotary AirLock Feeders are cast using grey iron. The castings are stress relieved. Housings have a minimum wall thickness of ½ inch and are deep-ribbed for rigidity.
Rotors are made integral by welding the heavy section vanes onto the shaft, stress relieving and then machining. The use of steel rather than cast iron for the rotors prevents vanes from breaking off when a foreign object becomes lodged between the rotor and housing.
AirLock feeder shafts have a large diameter for minimum deflection under load. Bearings are outboard of the end plates and shaft seal. The bearings are over-sized with respect to the load they are subjected to, and they are factory lubricated for the life of the bearings.
The shaft seals are moly impregnated urethane U-cups with O-ring expanders. This material is designed to give maximum life when operating unlubricated. Three U-cup packings are provided on each end.
