An easy-to-use reagent for determining the halide content of organic halogen compounds in 30 minutes or less is now available from GFS Chemicals, Inc. Sodium biphenyl solution in ethyl diglyme quantitatively abstracts all halide species and converts them to an ionic form suitable for assay by a variety of classical methods.

GFS* organic halogen reagent (OHR) saves time, protects against hazards in chemical preparation and handling, and frees users from complications arising from concerns about halide content in control samples. OHR can help identify trace contaminants or major substituents present in organic substrates.

OHR has been valuable in determining levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in groundwater samples. It facilitates the assay of many recycled organics and other materials, including: pesticides, solvents, pharmaceuticals, polymers, hydrocarbons, naphthas and other petrochemical products.

"OHR complements our array of analytical reagents and related products," explains GFS President Steel Hutchiuson. "Now, we offer packages of twenty 15 ml bottles that can be shipped a day or two after an order Is received. And, as always, there is no minimum order for GFS catalog items."

GFS advises those ordering OHR to use the product within a six-month period, and to use its color to gauge product strength. The viscous, dark blue solution gradually loses its intense color as it ages.
