New Cool-Cast™ Lance/Nozzle System Improves Continuous Caster Cooling Performance
The Cool-Cast™ lance/nozzle system from Delavan Spray Technologies has the potential to improve slab quality and reduce energy cost per ton shipped. This patented nozzle design produces a spray comprising highly uniform droplets (adjustable from 132 to 198 °m). As a result, the cooling process is more controllable, with reduced tendency for water puddling and localized uneven cooling or thermally induced roller deflection. The flat spray pattern is thick and even over angles from 60° to 120°, offering good coverage with fewer nozzles.

The Delavan® Cool-Cast design consumes less air than conventional nozzles, which saves energy through reduced air compressor load. Wide passages do not retain contaminants, preventing plugging.

The Cool-Cast lance/nozzle operates at an air/water ratio of 10/1. Maximum lance length is 24", and angled configurations are available. For space-limited positions, a "mini" version is available with a compact nozzle connected directly to the body. Water inlet size range is 3/8" to 1/2". Flow rate ranges from 1.5 to 10 gpm. Materials are stainless steel for dimensional stability and durability; other materials are available upon request. The tungsten carbide insert is durable and easily replaceable.
