EP, PSP Join AIChE Journal, Biotech Progress Online

May 23, 2000

New York—An important new feature has been added to the AIChE Web site with the launch of online versions of Environmental Progress and Process Safety Progress, AIChE's quarterlies for CPI professionals working in the areas of environmental health and safety. Digital versions of both magazines—from Spring 1999 forward for Environmental Progress, and Winter 1999 forward for Process Safety Progress—can now be found at www.aiche.org/publications.

Haeja Han, AIChE's associate publisher noted, "The PDF version offers linking capabilities that allow the subscribers to immediately tap into the topics of their interest in the environment- and safety-related areas available in the database." Gary Bennett, editor of Environmental Progress, echoes this benefit, observing that "it gives instant access to the articles appearing in AIChE's specialized magazines as soon as they are published."

The addition of electronic versions of Environmental Progress and Process Safety Progress brings the total number of AIChE online publications to four. AIChE Journal has been available online, through Science Direct, since June 1999, while Biotechnology Progress, a copublication with the Americal Chemical Society, first went online through the ACS Web site in 1998, with a link to the AIChE Web site. In addition, AIChE's student publication, ChAPTER One, has had an online presence since September 1998.

Environmental Progress, first published in 1982, reports on technological advances vital to chemical engineers involved in all aspects of the environment. The magazine provides thorough coverage of environmental issues including abatement, control, and containment of effluents and emissions within compliance standards, and pollution prevention and management technologies for including water, air, liquid, and solid wastes. Process Safety Progress, also first published in 1982, deals with the latest developments in chemical and hydrocarbon process safety, risk management, regulatory compliance, loss prevention, and health. According to its editor, Theodore A. Ventrone, "One of the keys to a good prevention of loss program is information on the safe handling of chemicals and chemical reactions and safe arrangement of chemical processes. This is vital to all aspects of chemical engineering."

In addition to the new online formats, Maura Mullen, managing editor of both quarterlies, reports that both publications will be featuring special content in coming issues. The Spring 2000 issue of Process Safety Progress features one of the 2000 William H. Doyle Award-winning articles—"Human Factors: Preventing Catastrophic Human Error in 24-Hour Operations" by Peggy Westfall-Lake. The other winning article, on "Flammability Zone Prediction Using Calculated Adiabatic Flame Temperatures," by Chad Mashuga and Daniel Crowl, appeared in the Fall 1999 issue. The Doyle Award is presented by AIChE's National Program Committee and Safety and Health Division in memory of Bill Doyle, founder of the AIChE Loss Prevention Symposium, to recognize the best paper(s) presented at the previous year's conference.

A special summer 2000 issue of Environmental Progress will focus on Life Cycle Assessment. "This special edition will help readers better understand the life-cycle concept and the environmental management tools that are being developed to implement LCA," guest editor Mary Ann Curran stated. "The articles were written by leaders in the field. Readers should find the articles enlightening and perhaps stimulating," she added.
