Case Study: Chemical Plant Gains Huge Fuel Savings By Upgrading Boiler Damper Drives
By ABB
Installing a new electric drive on a boiler damper results in much lower fuel consumption, leading to decision to add new drive to second boiler
A few years ago, engineers in a large chemical plant had to replace an aging (1980) pneumatic damper actuator on a steam boiler. They chose a state-of-the-art Contrac electric drive from ABB Instrumentation, Warminster, PA, with spectacular results.
Damper drives, also known as damper actuators, must precisely and reliably position a boiler's combustion air damper. Varying with boiler load, a damper position optimizes the amount of excess air in the fuel-air mixture. Too little air results in undesirable stack emissions; too much, reduces boiler efficiency and wastes fuel.
After installation of the first electric drive, engineers estimated the savings achieved from precise damper control. In terms of annual fuel savings on the one boiler, the figure came to over $300,000. The plant soon installed another Contrac drive on a second boiler.
