Case History: Sulfur-Rite® System Solid H₂S Removal System For Specialty Chemicals Producer

Cytec Corporation handles a multitude of processes to produce specialty chemicals for worldwide use. Their facility in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, produces a number of different products, including one chemical that produces H2S as a byproduct during the process run.

The employees complained that they could smell H2S in and around the building while this particular product run was in operation. Cytec was also notifi ed by the Canadian Ministry of Environment that emissions legislation was changing. As of 2006, the allowable fence line H2S concentration is a maximum of 10 ppm. Even though Cytec was below 10 ppm at the fence line, higher values were measured coming out the end of the stack of the building. So Cytec decided to install a scrubbing system to ensure that the H2S leaving the building would always be less than 10 ppm, so that an odd wind pattern would not enable the H2S to reach the fence line, about 1 km away.
